SPS is pleased to announce we are continuing our semi-monthly wine and cheese events with Candence Little and Susan Flynn presenting Writing into the Open Spaces.

The series is designed, first and foremost, to provide our community with opportunities for members to network, unwind and be thoughtful together. With ample time for members to meet up, socialize, share, and support each other, it includes a talk by a community member where we can explore psychodynamically informed ideas with time for discussion. This is a great way for us to build our sense of community, share our collective wisdom and grow together.

Description: Writing into the Open Spaces

Drawing on Pat Schneider’s Writing as Healing Method and Ira Progoff’s Intensive Journaling Method, Susan Flynn and Candence Little will share the depth writing processes they utilize to help individuals move into deeper, unmuddled places within and between. In this hour presentation, specific writing processes reaching toward the undiscovered will be shared for use in individual therapy, individual and group consultation, and groups where writing is the healing alchemy. Participants will have an opportunity to do an experiential writing process. Writing as an adjunct to psychodynamic sessions will be discussed as an option when financial or other constraints prevent increasing session frequency. Please come with curiosity if and how writing might be used to add a dimension to your personal and professional life.

Candence Little is in private practice. She personally began using the Ira Progoff Intensive Journaling process writing in the 1980’s and then introduced these writing processes to various consultation and study groups. She has woven these processes into psychotherapy work with patients, and finds that patients are able to use writing processes and the silent reflective aspect of this method.

Susan Flynn is a psychoanalyst in private practice. She first experienced Pat Schneider and her Writing as Healing process in Sutter’s Writing Workshops for Healing Professionals in 2005, In 2021, she became a certified facilitator in the Schneider writing method sponsored by Amherst Writer and Artists (AWA), and has been facilitating writing groups in local non-profits for individuals who have experienced early trauma. Susan uses a modified version of the Schneider writing method in her private practice as an adjunct to individual sessions. She published her first poetry collection In 2022, Seeing Begins in the Dark.

If You Have an Idea You Would Like Us to Consider:

SPS is offering our members a $200 stipend to recognize our valuable community speakers. Feel free to branch out- our group wants to facilitate a space where we can experiment,  socialize and explore ideas in a safe and supportive environment. You do not have to ‘be an expert’ – simply wanting to explore an idea is enough, and the board would be welcome to help flesh out an idea more fully if that would be helpful. Groups are also welcome to present.

Requirements:

1)      The subject matter needs to be connected in some way to the art, science, theory, practice, or implications of psychoanalysis (see Wikipedia description here) - ideas can be linked to psychoanalysis in any way that feels reasonable.

2)      The material and talk needs to be of a non-commercial nature.

Those interested should send an email to sacpsysoc@gmail.com briefly describing how their idea meets the criteria.

Examples of Ideas:

Exploring how they work (a sand tray therapist explains their work, a member describes a specific way of working with dreams or body work, a Jungian and an Object Relations Therapist talk about similarities in their perspectives.).

A specific population they have insight about (children, veterans, specific cultural groups)

A cultural phenomenon a member wants to think about psychodynamically.

Exploring an iconic scene from a movie.

Discussing how psychoanalysis has played a role in marketing.

How psychodynamic perspectives could help deal with racism.

Really, anything you feel is important enough to want to share with this group.
